Light the MUP is a community group dedicated to making the
Tofino MUP better at night.
Background
The MUP (Multi Use Path) is an asphalt path about 1.5 m wide and 6 km long. It runs from downtown Tofino through to the Info Center near Cox Bay at the edge of Pacific Rim National Park.
Most people carry lights when using the MUP at night, but many do not. On dark nights, it's often easier for the unlit to travel along the highway and listen for cars than to ride on the MUP. This is due to the MUP's narrow width, dips and curves, and the risk of colliding with bushes & other unlit users in the darkness.
Especially hazardous times are during summer weekends after midnight as the bars, parties, and beach fires fizzle out and many people straggle homeward, leaving downtown Tofino and heading towards their homes near the beach (or vice versa). Many collisions with unlit people have happened this way!
Also, during winter nights it is dark early in the day and the MUP surface often ices.
